Coalface (part 2)

Subliminal beneath the fringe festival September 2015 Leichhardt Town Hall and environs curated by Bronwyn Tuohy photo Stephen Oxenbury

In a cry of protest against Big Coal, 153 musicians from around Australia and the world give voice to the 153 species of birds found on the Bimblebox Nature Refuge in the Galilee, marked for destruction by a massive coal mine. Short-listed for an Australian Art Music Award 2015, The Coalface soundtrack, video, mask and coal-ship shoes are an installation and also a performance work, involving risky navigations in clumsy vessels – the Galilee coal would be shipped out through the Barrier Reef. This iteration of Coalface draws on the work currently touring, and it also draws on this location – at the backstage door of the grand Leichhardt Town Hall, it suggests a drama about to unfold. http://www.burragorang.org/coalface-2014.php
